“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor / Mumya: Ejder İmparatoru’nun Mezarı” is the sequel to "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns", which cost a total of $178 million to make and grossed $848 million worldwide. The film is set to be released on August 1, 2008. One noticeable change in this installment is the replacement of the female lead actress and director.
Stephen Sommers, the director of the first two "Mummy" films, stated in November 2001 that there was a high demand for a third film, but they would only make it if they could create a film that was much bigger and better than the first two.
In May 2004, Sommers expressed doubts about having the necessary energy to make the third "Mummy" film.
In December 2005, a trial screenplay draft was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. This screenplay focused on the story of a Chinese mummy who, along with his cursed army, sets out to conquer the world in 1940.
In March 2006, actor Oded Fehr revealed that he had learned during a meeting with Stephen Sommers that the third film was in the development stage and that the screenplay had been written.
In September of the same year, Universal Pictures offered the directorial role to Joe Johnston, and filming was set to begin in early 2007.
In January 2007, the director was changed again. Universal officials started negotiations with Rob Cohen to direct the third "Mummy" film, set to be released in 2008.
In the following announcement, it was revealed that the new film's story would revolve around the two main characters played by Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello, as well as their now grown-up son. It should be noted that Rachel Weisz, who played the female lead in the first two "Mummy" films, had left the series to star in Peter Jackson's "Lovely Bones."
Another new development was the casting of Luke Ford as the son of Fraser and Bello's characters. In the second film, "The Mummy Returns," this character was introduced as a 10-year-old child. In the new film, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which takes place 10 years later, Fraser and Bello's characters' son should be a young man of around 20 years old.
